Phosphor Study No. 9

The ninth of an ongoing series and the first Tsukahara has editioned. A shoulder, a jaw, and the green of a screen that has been on too long. What she is studying is bloom: the way a bright value on failing phosphor spills into its neighbours and softens an edge she never softened. The painting is therefore partly made by the display, and the edition is sold with the profile that reproduces it. Collectors who have shown it on modern glass report that it becomes a different and less interesting picture, which Tsukahara has described, without evident regret, as correct.
