Eve

A standing woman, lit from inside, coming apart at the hands and the hem. Adeyi-Marsh trained as a structural engineer and it shows in everything else she makes — the loads in her work are always resolved — so a figure that does not resolve is, by her standards, a confession. She has given no account of the title beyond the one word. What is difficult about the picture is the face. It is not beautiful and it is not symmetrical; it is a specific face, calm and entirely unreadable, and a number of people who have stood in front of it have said, unprompted, that they recognise her. None of them has been able to say from where. The artist, asked directly, said only that she had not worked from a sitter, which is not quite an answer to the question.
