I dealt in prints for nine years before I dealt in this, and the argument I kept having was always the same one: that a file cannot be a work because a file can be copied. It was a bad argument about prints in 1890 and it is a bad argument now. What makes a work is that somebody made it, that you can find out who, and that the object you are buying is the one they made rather than a rumour of it. The trade solved that problem a long time ago. We use the same solution.

So the gallery is run the old way. Every work here was seen on the hardware it was made for, in the studio or in this room, before it was taken on. Every work comes with a signature, an edition number, a provenance I can stand behind, and an integrity hash you can check yourself in about four seconds. Nothing is listed that we have not held. Nothing is listed at a price we would not also pay.

The catalogue is twelve works because twelve is what I can talk about properly. Galleries that list ten thousand items are not galleries; they are inventory systems with a typeface. If you want the one Serrano crowd scene that took fourteen months, it is upstairs and I will show it to you. If you want a thousand things you have not looked at, there are other places, and they will be delighted to see you.

We open Tuesday to Friday by appointment. Appointments are forty-five minutes, which is roughly the length of the two works here that need watching rather than looking at. Write to us and say what you want to see.

Viewing

By appointment only. The room is on the ninth floor and the lift is reliable; there is step-free access from Vellum Court at street level. We can show any work in the catalogue on request, including the two live routines, which we run on period hardware because that is how they were calibrated.

Acquisition

Works are sold by enquiry. We answer with a condition report, the full provenance file, and a viewing date. Prices are quoted in credits and hold for thirty days. We do not run auctions, we do not take payment through this site, and we do not hold anything on a deposit smaller than a conversation. See enquiries.

Consignment

We look at consigned work twice a year and take on very little. If you have something you believe belongs in this room, write with the artist, the year, the edition and the provenance, and please do not send the file itself.
