Two colours, sixty-four thousand pixels, and a figure that is unmistakably asleep. Serrano gets there by lying about the light: there is no gradient available to him, so he dithers the pillow and leaves the face almost untouched, and the eye reads the untouched area as warmth. Held close, the dither is a texture of dots with a rhythm to it, tightening under the jaw. Held at the distance the work is hung, it is linen. The title is the defensive posture, not a room; Serrano is fond of words that have been taken away from their first owners.
